Why We Inspect Upholstery Before Cleaning
The goal isn't simply to make a piece of furniture look cleaner. The goal is to choose a cleaning approach that's appropriate for that particular piece. Every job starts with a real inspection, usually 15 to 20 minutes, before any cleaning solution comes near the fabric.
I start by looking the piece over in natural light to evaluate the overall soiling, spots, stains and odors, and to check whether the cushions are foam or down and feather filled, since that affects how they can be cleaned. I also look for cracks, rips, tears, pilling and fuzzing, because those condition issues can limit what's safe to do.
When appropriate, I test the fabric itself to help determine whether it's natural, synthetic, or a blend. That's a big factor in which cleaning solution is safe to use, since the wrong solution on the wrong fiber is how fabric gets discolored or damaged.
I also use UV light when appropriate. It can reveal contamination or conditions that aren't visible under normal lighting, like old pet accidents or residue from a product already used on the fabric, such as OxyClean or Resolve. Knowing that's there before I start keeps me from applying something that reacts badly with what's already in the fabric.
I'll also ask you some questions: how old the piece is, where it was purchased, whether it's been professionally cleaned before, any spot-cleaning you've already tried, what products you used, and whether pets have had accidents on it. All of that changes how I approach the piece.
Once I know what I'm working with, I select the cleaning approach based on the fabric, construction, condition, soiling and anything else relevant, and I set realistic expectations with you before I start. When appropriate, I'll also test the approach on a small area first. That's the difference between a piece that's cleaned correctly and one that's just had something sprayed on it.
Drying Time

Not every piece needs the same upholstery treatment. Once I know the fabric and condition, I decide whether spot treatment, stain treatment, or an odor-related treatment makes sense for that specific piece, and I'll tell you honestly what to expect. I don't promise complete stain removal or guaranteed odor removal, because that depends on the fabric, how long the spot has been there, and what's actually causing it.

Do you use a UV light? Why?
Yes. It reveals things normal light can't, like organic contamination or residue from a product already used on the fabric. Knowing what's there before I start keeps me from using a solution that could react badly with it.
Should I add fabric protectant?
It's available if you want it, including a PFAS-free option, but I won't push it on you if it's not something you need.
