Why Air Fresheners Don't Work

Air fresheners, candles, and plug-ins don't remove odors. They cover them up for a while. It's like putting on cologne without showering: the smell is still there, you've just added another layer. Real odor removal means finding the source, treating it with the right product, and giving that product time to work.

No Two Odor Jobs Are Ever the Same

The same smell can need a completely different approach depending on three things:

  • What it soaked into: carpet and pad, concrete, wood, drywall, or upholstery all absorb odor differently.
  • What's causing it: pet urine, rodents, tobacco or cannabis smoke, and skunk each call for a different treatment.
  • The conditions: humidity, temperature, and airflow can make an odor fade, spread, or come back.

The Basement That Almost Stalled a Home Sale (Natick, MA)

A homeowner in Natick was getting ready to list their house, and there was one problem they couldn't solve: a cat urine odor in the unfinished basement.   2. Treatment at the source: I apply a professional-grade treatment matched to the odor and the surface, including below the surface when that's where the odor lives.
  3. Dwell time: I give the treatment time to work. Rushing it is the most common reason odor treatments fail.
  4. Follow-up: I check the results. Heavy contamination sometimes needs a second application.

  • How many treatments will I need?

    Many odors clear with one treatment. Heavy or long-standing contamination, like urine soaked into concrete, can take two. I'll tell you what to expect after the inspection.

  • Can you get cat urine odor out of concrete?

    Often, yes. Concrete is porous, so the treatment has to reach into it, not just sit on top. I did exactly that for a Natick homeowner whose basement odor was holding up the sale of their house.
