A Little Newton History

Newton earned its nickname “The Garden City” honestly — nearly 20% of its land is open space, spread across a patchwork of thirteen villages instead of one downtown. That layout goes back to Newton's start: settled in 1630 as part of Cambridge, it split off in 1681 as “Cambridge Village,” became “Newtown” in 1691, and finally took the name Newton in 1766. It became a city on January 5, 1874 — the same year the Garden City nickname stuck.

Unlike Waltham next door, Newton never became a true manufacturing city — early mills at Newton Upper Falls and Newton Lower Falls turned out snuff, chocolate, glue, and paper, but never had the water power to go much further. What Newton became instead was one of the first commuter suburbs in America, once the Boston and Worcester Railroad rolled through in 1834. Boston's business class started building homes along Commonwealth Avenue and in the Newton Hills not long after, and the suburb-to-the-city identity has defined the place ever since.

A couple of local trivia points worth knowing: Newton was home to the Stanley Motor Carriage Company — makers of the Stanley Steamer — starting in 1902. And every Patriots' Day, the Boston Marathon runs straight through Newton, including the infamous Heartbreak Hill near Boston College in Chestnut Hill.
