A Little Waltham History

Waltham earned its nickname “The Watch City” honestly. The town was incorporated in 1738 and became a city in 1884, but its industrial reputation started decades earlier, in 1813, when Francis Cabot Lowell opened the Boston Manufacturing Company right on Moody Street — one of the first fully integrated textile mills in the country, powered by the Charles River dam that still runs beside it. That mill building still stands today, now converted into apartments.
The watch company that gave the city its name arrived in 1854 and, before closing in 1957, turned out roughly 40 million watches, clocks, and precision instruments. Moody Street itself later earned a run as Greater Boston's “Restaurant Row” — though these days that reputation has faded some, if you ask a longtime local.
The other big claim to fame: Route 128, which cuts along the edge of town, opened its first stretch in 1951 as the first limited-access circumferential highway (beltway) in the country. It reshaped Waltham from a mill town into a magnet for defense and tech companies through the back half of the 20th century — part of what people used to call the “Golden Semicircle.”
Today that same mix of old mill brick and new office parks is a lot of what we're cleaning up after.
